Alphonse VII de Castille carried the war into the valley of the Guadalquivir. The passage of armies and the upheaval that accompanied them delivered the Jewish quarter of Cordoue to pillage and fire.
Abraham ibn Ezra, who was living in Spain at the time, composed an elegy on the misfortunes of the communities of al-Andalus; it is one of the sources attesting to the event. Cordoue was the former capital of the caliphate, the city of Hasdaï ibn Shaprut and the place where Maïmonide was born a few years later.
The disorder of those decades — declining Almoravid power, Christian kingdoms advancing, taifas re-emerging — brought to an end the period in which the communities of Muslim Spain had been able to live between two worlds. The Almohad conquest that followed completed their dispersal.
