the quarter of new Christians plundered and burned for three days
A generation after the forced conversions, Andalusia counted a large population of new Christians — the conversos — whom old Christian society suspected of secretly judaizing and envied for the offices they held.
In Córdoba, a procession dispute served as a trigger: the converso quarter was pillaged and burned for three days, and a confraternity of "old Christians" swore to forever exclude the converts from the city's offices. This was the birth of the statutes of purity of blood, which made ancestry a criterion of law where baptism was supposed to erase all difference.
