Le Bi'ur de Moses Mendelssohn a révolutionné l'accès des Juifs allemands à la Torah en proposant une traduction en allemand (en caractères hébraïques) accompagnée d'un commentaire rationnel. Il a servi de passerelle entre le monde du ghetto et la culture européenne, inaugurant la Haskala (les Lumières juives).
