Vapniarka (now oblast of Vinnytsia, Ukraine) is known for the eponymous concentration camp, opened in 1942 in Romanian Transnistria, where Romanian antifascist Jews and left-wing activists were interned. The detainees were deliberately fed with Lathyrus sativus (singletary peas), causing epidemics of neurolathyrism (paralysis); interned physicians secretly documented these experimentations, which became the subject of testimonies and historical studies.
