Tamentit est le principal centre d'une fédération d'oasis du Touat (Sahara algérien) où une importante communauté juive prospéra du XIVe au XVe siècle, jouant un rôle clé dans le commerce transsaharien de l'or et des épices. En 1492, le chef islamiste al-Maghili organisa un pogrom qui détruisit la communauté et ses synagogues.
