Ancienne cité saxonne de Transylvanie, Sibiu (Hermannstadt en allemand) n'autorisa l'installation juive qu'au XIXe siècle après l'allégement des restrictions habsbourgeoises. La communauté y fonda une synagogue et des institutions propres avant de subir les persécutions de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
