Oxyrhynchos (auj. El-Bahnasa, Moyenne-Égypte) est célèbre pour les milliers de papyrus mis au jour à partir de 1896. Parmi ces documents figurent des contrats, lettres et textes religieux révélant une présence juive significative aux Ier–IVe siècles de l'ère commune. Ces papyrus constituent une source de premier ordre pour l'histoire des Juifs d'Égypte romaine et byzantine.
