Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome at the mouth of the Tiber, possesses the oldest excavated synagogue in the Western world, dating from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE. Its successive construction phases, inscriptions and architectural elements (bima, aedicula) testify to the life of the Jewish community of Ostia in the Roman Empire.
