Ancienne Nisibe (Nusaybin), ville frontière entre Rome et la Perse puis entre la Turquie et la Syrie, abrita l'une des plus importantes académies talmudiques de l'Antiquité tardive, fondée par Rav Yehouda bar Yehezkiel. Son école forma de nombreux sages du Talmud babylonien.
