Ville sainte chiite du Khorassan, Mashhad a été le théâtre en 1839 d'une conversion forcée massive de Juifs (Allahdad), donnant naissance aux « Djadid al-Islam », crypto-juifs qui pratiquaient secrètement leur religion tout en affichant l'islam. Cette communauté de convertis de force émigra progressivement vers Téhéran et la Palestine au XXe siècle.
