Kozienice (Kozhnits in Yiddish) owes its renown in the Jewish world to Rabbi Israël Hopsztajn, the « Maguid of Kozhnits, » a major figure in Polish Hasidism in the late eighteenth century. The Jewish community had existed there for several generations before him and developed considerably under the influence of this dynasty. The Shoah entirely destroyed the community, deported to Treblinka.
