Karachi welcomed in the 19th century a composite Jewish community, bringing together Bene Israel and Baghdadi Jews attracted by the commercial development of the port under British rule. In the early 20th century, the community numbered several thousand members active in commerce, law and the professions; it left Pakistan almost entirely after the 1947 partition, emigrating mainly to Israel and India.
