Gharyan, chef-lieu du Jabal Nafusa en Tripolitaine, abritait une communauté juive vivant dans des habitations troglodytiques (ghorfas), documentée par des voyageurs européens du XIXe siècle. Cette communauté exerçait principalement des métiers artisanaux et commerçait avec Tripoli avant son émigration en Israël après 1948.
