Erzurum (ancienne Théodosiopolis), carrefour des routes commerciales entre l'Anatolie et la Perse, comptait une présence juive documentée au Moyen Âge et à l'époque ottomane. Les Juifs y participaient aux échanges entre l'Empire ottoman, la Perse et le Caucase.
