Dakar, capitale de l'Afrique Occidentale Française, accueillit des familles juives nord-africaines et libanaises à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, engagées dans le commerce atlantique. La communauté resta modeste et ne constitua jamais d'institution communautaire formelle durable.
