Ancienne résidence des ducs de Lorraine sur la Meuse, Commercy a accueilli des familles juives bénéficiant de la protection du duc Léopold au début du XVIIIe siècle. La présence juive, documentée dans des lettres patentes ducales, constitue un exemple précoce de tolérance princière en Lorraine.
