Ville du Delta oriental égyptien sur la route entre Égypte et Palestine, Bilbeis est documentée dans la Geniza du Caire comme lieu de présence juive au Moyen Âge. Elle constituait une étape pour les voyageurs et marchands juifs entre Fustat et la Terre sainte.
