Adwa (Aduwa), ville du Tigré éthiopien, est célèbre pour la bataille du 1er mars 1896 où l'Éthiopie infligea une défaite décisive à l'armée italienne. La région du Tigré, comme d'autres zones montagneuses d'Éthiopie septentrionale, comptait des populations Beta Israel (Juifs éthiopiens) dans les villages environnants, bien que la communauté d'Adwa elle-même fût modeste.
