Les Juifs de Panama

Commercial crossroads of the isthmus joining the two oceans, Panama attracted from the colonial period and especially in the 19th and 20th centuries Sephardic Jews come from Curaçao and the Caribbean, as well as Sephardim from the Mediterranean periphery and Ashkenazim. The construction of the Canal and the rise of import-export commerce favored the settlement and prosperity of several families. The community organized itself in distinct congregations according to origins, equipped with synagogues, schools and communal institutions. Having remained active and well structured, the Panamanian Jewish community numbers among the most solidly established in Central America, and some Jews there held leading public offices.
