Les Juifs de Lublin

Lublin, in eastern Poland, was one of the great centers of Ashkenazi Talmudic scholarship from the late Middle Ages onward, nicknamed the "Jerusalem of the Kingdom of Poland." Seat of a reputed yeshiva and meeting place of the Council of the Four Lands (Va'ad Arba Aratzot), the city gathered Hebrew printers, rabbinical decisors and, in the modern period, important Hasidic centers and the Hokhmei Lublin founded in the 20th century. Its Jews were merchants, artisans and scholars, and the community remained one of the most vibrant in Poland until the Second World War. Under Nazi occupation, the ghetto was liquidated and almost the entire population was exterminated, notably within the framework of Aktion Reinhard and in the nearby camp of Majdanek.
