Murder of Mireille Knoll, survivor of the Vel' d'Hiv roundup

Mireille Knoll, a survivor of the Vel' d'Hiv roundup from which she had escaped as a child, was killed in her home in the eleventh arrondissement of Paris by a neighbor she had known since his childhood, and her apartment was then set on fire.

The murder occurred less than a year after the killing on the rue de Vaucouleurs, in the same working-class district of eastern Paris, and struck an elderly, isolated, and defenseless woman who had survived the German persecution. The white march organized in Paris in her memory brought together political and religious leaders; the case reignited the French debate over recognition of the antisemitic motive in crimes committed by neighbors.
