Deadliest attack targeting Jews in the United States
27 oct. 2018·Pittsburgh, synagogue Tree of Life
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The Tree of Life synagogue, in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, housed three congregations that were celebrating Saturday morning services. On October 27, 2018, during prayers, an armed man carrying rifles entered the building shouting that he wanted to kill Jews, and gunned down worshippers from all three congregations before being subdued by police officers, several of whom were wounded. The killer, steeped in "great replacement" theories spread online, blamed the community in particular for helping refugees through HIAS. It is the deadliest attack ever carried out against Jews in the United States. The building, closed since then, is being transformed into a memorial and a center for the study of antisemitism.
