The Jewish cemetery of Quatzenheim, in Alsace, is desecrated: ninety-six headstones are toppled or vandalized, swastikas painted on the stones, some of them several centuries old. The discovery takes place in the morning.

Alsace preserves one of the densest networks of rural Jewish cemeteries in Western Europe, inherited from village communities established since the Middle Ages and which disappeared in the twentieth century: these enclosures are often the last material witnesses to a Jewish presence in the village. The desecration, which occurred as part of a series that affected several Alsatian cemeteries, led the President of the Republic to visit the site and relaunched the inventory and protection of these sites.
