three days of antisemitic riots in the Hasidic neighborhood after a traffic accident, a Jewish student stabbed to death

Three days of riots followed in Crown Heights, after a traffic accident in which a child was killed by a car from the Rabbi of Lubavitch's motorcade. Groups roamed the neighborhood attacking Jewish residents; a student who had come from Australia was stabbed to death.

This Brooklyn neighborhood was home to a Hasidic community and an Afro-Caribbean community living side by side. The riots were long described as a clash between neighbors, before the antisemitic dimension was recognized as such by the New York State inquiry commission.
