The Crown Heights neighborhood in New York is home to the world center of the Lubavitch Hasidic movement and one of the highest concentrations of yeshiva students in the United States.
In early March, a minibus carrying students returning from a visit to their hospitalized rabbi is targeted on the Brooklyn Bridge. A man opens fire with an automatic weapon from a car; a teenager is fatally wounded, several others injured.
The attack occurs a few days after the massacre at the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, which the perpetrator cited as inspiration. Long described as a traffic incident, it would not be recognized as an antisemitic attack until years later, following a campaign led by the victim's mother.
