New attack against the synagogue, by grenade, following that of 1986

The Neve Shalom synagogue, the principal sanctuary of Istanbul's Jewish community — heir to the exiles from Spain welcomed by the Ottoman Empire — had already been the scene of a massacre six years earlier, when a commando opened fire on worshippers during the Sabbath service.
It is attacked a second time at the beginning of March, with grenades, while worshippers were inside. People are wounded and the building damaged.
This second attack against the same site led the Istanbul community to transform its synagogues into protected buildings, closed and guarded — something they had never been throughout the Ottoman centuries.
