The capture of Antioche by the crusaders, after a siege of several months, ended with the massacre of the city's population. The Jewish community, ancient and numerous, vanished with it.
Antioche had been one of the great centers of Hellenistic and then Byzantine Judaism, and its synagogue was renowned. After the Latin conquest, the city counted no Jews for generations; the letters of the Cairo Genizah mention the ransoming of captives organized from Egypt for those who had survived.
