Antwerp is home to one of the most visible Jewish communities in Western Europe, concentrated around the diamond merchants' quarter and its religious and educational institutions.
On the morning of July twenty-seventh, a group of children was waiting outside a community center for the bus that was to take them to summer camp. A grenade was thrown at them from the street. A teenager was killed and around twenty children and chaperones were wounded.
The attack targeted children identified as Jewish in the middle of a city, in a country with no connection to the Middle East conflict. It led Belgium to place schools and synagogues in Antwerp under permanent guard — a measure that has never been lifted since.
