The Marseille arrests of winter strike the downtown quarters before the destruction of the Old Port.

At the end of January, the German police and the French police arrested the Jews of the Opéra district and the streets of the Vieux-Port in Marseille, then proceeded to evacuate and destroy the old neighborhoods on the north bank with explosives. The individuals apprehended were directed to Compiègne and then Drancy. The operation, prepared in Berlin and carried out with the assistance of several thousand French police officers, was the largest roundup conducted outside the Paris region.
