Arson attack on the Or Aviv synagogue, completely destroyed

2 avril 2002·Marseille

Toll
dégâts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Marseille is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in France, largely descended from repatriated populations from North Africa, scattered across the city's neighborhoods.

The Or Aviv synagogue, in the Caillols neighborhood, is burned down during the night. The fire completely destroys the building, its Torah scrolls, and its library; only the walls remain. The attack occurs at the height of the wave of violence accompanying the Israeli offensive in the West Bank in France.

The burning of an entire synagogue — rather than mere vandalism — marks a crossing of a threshold. It hastens the establishment of permanent protection for Jewish places of worship across the entire French territory.
