the community attacked
The community of Marseille was attacked during the massacres of the Black Death. The city had been the first port in Western Europe to be struck by the epidemic, which arrived from Sicily by galley.
Marseille was, however, in the opinion of chroniclers, one of the cities where Jews lived most freely: they practiced trades there, owned ships, and wore no distinguishing mark. The epidemic undid in a matter of weeks what two centuries of coexistence had established.
