Manosque had an ancient community, well documented by the town's notarial registers, in which Jews appear as physicians, merchants, and moneylenders. It was attacked during the wave of violence that accompanied the arrival of the plague in Provence.
These notarial archives are precious: they show Jews and Christians contracting together, pursuing one another before the same judges, sharing the same streets. It was this ordinary life that the epidemic abruptly interrupted, before it resumed, diminished, in the following decades.
