The community of Linz was destroyed during the Black Death.
The Danube city readmitted Jews in the following century, then lost them with the general expulsion from Austria; its modern Jewish life dates only from the nineteenth century.
The city controlled the Danube bridge and its toll, and its Jewish moneylenders served the Habsburg dukes as much as the merchants; the wave swept them away, and the ducal accounts thereafter record the resumption of debts by the prince, as everywhere in the Empire.
