The community of Ensisheim, seat of Habsburg administration in Upper Alsace, was destroyed during the Black Death.
The Jews of Alsace fell partly under the authority of the Duke of Austria, who protected them in exchange for tribute; the city of his own regency was no exception to the massacre.
