the community destroyed
Ensisheim, seat of the Habsburg administration in Upper Alsace, saw its community destroyed by the Armleder bands.
Duke Albert of Habsburg, who held the province, protected his Jews with more constancy than most princes of the Empire — not out of benevolence but because they were a fiscal resource. He had the Armleder pursued and concluded a treaty with the cities of the region to repress them. The protection was real, and it was self-interested: the two things went together.
