The community of Guebwiller was attacked during the Armleder massacres in Alsace. The town belonged to the abbey of Murbach.
The Armleder mark the end of a period: after them, the German massacres would no longer be the work of bands coming from outside but of the cities themselves, which would judge, condemn, and burn according to due form. The Black Death, ten years later, would come by sentence of the urban council and not by peasant riot.
