the community attacked
The community of La Baume-de-Sisteron, on the right bank of the Durance opposite Sisteron, was attacked during the Black Death massacres.
The Provençal Jewish quarters were numerous and small, often consisting of a dozen families, spread across the villages of the valleys. This dispersion made almost all of them vulnerable and meant that the wave could sweep them away within a few weeks, without any of them having the means to defend themselves or come to the aid of their neighbors.
