The Black Death reached Provence through Marseille at the beginning of the year. In Toulon, on the night of Holy Saturday, the crowd forced the Jewish quarter, killed, and dragged the dead through the streets. This was, throughout all of Europe, the first massacre linked to the epidemic.
The fact is worth noting: in Toulon, the accusation of well-poisoning had not yet taken shape. It would arise a few months later in Savoy, under torture. Here violence precedes explanation; the motive was fabricated after the fact, to justify what had already been done elsewhere and what would be done everywhere again.
