The Pastoureaux were shepherds, landless peasants, and adolescents who had set out from northern France with the idea of reaching Spain and liberating the Holy Land. Having neither leader nor destination, they descended the valley of the Garonne attacking the Jewish communities they encountered.
In Toulouse, the Jewish quarter was attacked; Jews were killed or forcibly baptized. The king of France Philippe V ordered the bands dispersed, but the orders arrived after they had passed through, and the consuls of the towns had often refrained from intervening.
