La communauté de Damas, ancienne et profondément arabophone, vécut au cœur de la ville aux quartiers juifs distincts. Réputée pour ses rabbins, ses orfèvres et ses tisserands, elle subit en 1840 l'affaire de Damas, accusation de meurtre rituel qui eut un retentissement international. Le déclin s'accéléra aux XXe siècle avec l'émigration.
