La tradition rabbinique compte 613 commandements (taryag mitzvot) dans la Torah, dont 248 positifs et 365 négatifs. Plusieurs ouvrages médiévaux en dressent la liste et en débattent les critères : le Sefer haMitzvot de Maïmonide, le Sefer Mitzvot Gadol (Semag) de Moïse de Coucy et le Sefer haHinoukh, qui explique aussi leurs raisons. Ces énumérations restent au cœur de la réflexion halakhique.
