Descendant de la maison royale de David, il dirigea le premier retour d'exil de Babylone et posa les fondations du Second Temple (Esdras 3). Prophètes Aggée et Zacharie virent en lui un espoir messianique. Il symbolise la restauration nationale après la catastrophe de 586.
