Descendant de Juifs ayant fui le Portugal lors de l'Inquisition, installé en Égypte. Élève du Radbaz, il est considéré comme le dernier grand-rabbin (autorité reconnue par toutes les communautés) d'Égypte. Son autorité halakhique fit référence dans tout le pays.
