Fondateur du sionisme politique, auteur de L'État des Juifs (Der Judenstaat, 1896). Journaliste viennois marqué par l'affaire Dreyfus, il organisa le Premier Congrès sioniste à Bâle (1897) et posa les bases institutionnelles de l'État d'Israël, proclamé 44 ans après sa mort.
