Né à Vienne dans une famille de propriétaires terriens, sioniste, Paul Joseph Diamant fut généalogiste et historien des Juifs d'Autriche. Il fonda l'éphémère « Archiv für jüdische Familienforschung » (1912–1913), soutint sa thèse à Vienne (1929) sur la sigillographie et l'héraldique juives, et se consacra notamment à la généalogie de Theodor Herzl (dont il était parent). Il émigra en Palestine après l'Anschluss.
