רעגיסטער געשיכטע · באַהיטער, נישט באַזיצער
Né le 21 février 1867 à Mannheim (grand-duché de Bade) dans une famille juive allemande. Émigré à Londres puis à New York, il devient en 1897 associé de la banque Kuhn, Loeb & Co. où il se spécialise dans la réorganisation des compagnies de chemin de fer. Grand mécène des arts, il préside le Metropolitan Opera (env. 1910–1931). Il a publié plusieurs recueils d'essais et de discours sur l'art, l'économie et la politique.
