Né le 30 juillet 1892 à Borne, fils d'un riche fabricant de textile (la famille industrielle juive Spanjaard de Borne), il fit carrière comme chef d'orchestre et compositeur aux Pays-Bas. Interdit de scène sous l'occupation nazie en raison de son origine juive, il fut déporté et périt à Auschwitz (présent dans la base des détenus d'Auschwitz).
