Séfarade exilé d'Espagne (1492), il s'établit au Caire où il fut nommé chef rabbinique (Nagid/Hakham Bashi) d'Égypte, charge tenue une quarantaine d'années ; sa yeshiva forma notamment Betsalel Ashkenazi et Isaac Louria. Vers 90 ans, il répartit sa fortune aux pauvres et s'installa à Safed, siégeant au tribunal rabbinique présidé par Joseph Karo. Il laissa plus de 3 000 responsa.
