Philosophe d'Amsterdam, excommunié (herem) par la communauté juive en 1656. Son Traité théologico-politique (1670) fonde la critique biblique moderne. Son Éthique, chef-d'œuvre du rationalisme, influença les Lumières. Hegel le qualifia de « point de départ de toute philosophie moderne ».
