רעגיסטער געשיכטע · באַהיטער, נישט באַזיצער

Hébraïsant et auteur, né en 1812 à Peisern, dans le grand-duché de Posen, mort à Londres le 24 février 1893. Il se rend en Angleterre en 1840, maîtrise rapidement l'anglais, et est élu en 1843 prédicateur funéraire de la Grande Synagogue. Il publie en 1847 une nouvelle édition, avec traduction anglaise, du « Sefer Ḥayyim » (Le Livre de la vie), puis, en 1859, le « Mivḥar ha-Peninim » de Salomon ibn Gabirol, recueil d'aphorismes éthiques, également accompagné d'une traduction anglaise. Il démissionne de sa charge en 1884, après plus de quarante ans de service, ayant obtenu de Sir George Grey plusieurs concessions permettant aux prisonniers juifs de pratiquer leur religion.

Savant hébraïste et auteur ; né en 1812 à Peisern (grand-duché de Posnanie) ; mort le 24 février 1893 à Londres. Son père, négociant en blé, donna à son fils une éducation religieuse et profane soignée. En 1840, Ascher se rendit en Angleterre, où il maîtrisa rapidement la langue anglaise, et, en 1843, fut élu « ḳabranim rabbi » (prédicateur funéraire) de la Grande Synagogue. En 1847, il publia une nouvelle édition du célèbre « Sefer Ḥayyim » (The Book of Life), accompagnée d'une traduction anglaise. En 1859, il publia le « MibḦar ha-Peninim » (A Choice of Pearls) de Solomon ben Gabirol, comprenant une collection d'aphorismes éthiques, de maximes et de réflexions, avec un texte anglais et des notes explicatives. Il écrivit deux autres ouvrages d'importance mineure, « Initiation of Youth » (1850), un petit catéchisme, et le rituel pour la « Dedication of the House ». En 1884, il démissionna de sa charge, qu'il avait occupée pendant plus de quarante ans. Ascher obtint de Sir George Grey plusieurs concessions en faveur des prisonniers juifs, afin qu'ils puissent observer leur religion.
